Sermon: The Most Remarkable Sermon
Text: Matthew 5:33-48
Thesis: We Have The Best Description Of Genuine Holiness

I. It’s Not Just Oath We Need To Be Concerned With. (vs. 33-37)
A. This world is full of empty promises.
B. Oaths aren’t nearly as important as just telling and living by the truth.

II. It’s Not About Taking Revenge In Order To Get Justice. (vs. 38-42)
A. Jesus’ audience was well aware of the teachings about exacting justice.
B. Jesus wanted His people to do more than merely keep the rules.

III. It’s Not About Following Normal Human Nature. (vs. 43-48)
A. Human nature says love and enjoy those who are like or believe like us.
B. Jesus asks us to love those who do not and may never love or even accept us.

Conclusion: I believe that the Sermon on the Mount contains the noblest description of genuine holiness ever shared. What we have here is an outline of life in God’s kingdom that stirs us to examine our inner motives as well as our outwards acts. This sermon prompts some important questions. Like who can live this way? Or how can I measure up? But the true point of this whole sermon is for us to humbly accept by faith the One who preached this message.
