Sermon: The Use Of Our Tongues
Text: James 3:1 – 12
Thesis: Our Tongues Can Be Used For Good Or Evil.

I. James Reminds Us That We Can Control And Direct Our Speech.
A. He uses the illustration of a bit in the mouth of a horse to prove this.
B. He will also use the rudder of a ship to prove this.

II. James Shows Us That Contentious Speech Can Be Destructive.
A. He will use fire to illustrate this.
B. He will also use poison to show this.

III. James Points Out That Conflicting Speech Can Be Confusing.
A. He illustrates this by using springs of water.
B. He will also do so by using fruit bearing trees and vines.

Conclusion: The book of James is full of wisdom shared in short, meaningful words and verse. It closely resembles the book of Proverbs. But with this subject matter, James takes the time to really illustrate and teach the church the importance of our words, whether spoken or written. May we learn this lesson well for the sake of our souls, for our witness and for the glory of God.
