Sermon: Name Your Rope
Text: I Samuel 17:28 & 29
Thesis: It’s Time To Untie Yourself From What’s Holding You Back From God’s Will.
I. Eliab May Have Been Jealous Of David’s Heart.
A. Jealousy is often expressed through anger.
B. Jealousy often is accompanied by unwarranted accusations.
II. David’s Courage May Have Made Eliab Ashamed Of His Own Secret Fear.
A. Knocking others down doesn’t lift you up.
B. We don’t want others to see us fearful.
III. Eliab May Not Have Wanted David’s Success To Remind Him Of His Own Failures.
A. We don’t like confused roles in life.
B. The whole army had become immovable by one large obstacle.
Conclusion: Look, maybe you have a rope which needs to be untied too. You can’t drag this weight and be all that God has called you to do and be. Your rope could be a past mistake, a bad choice or even a personal failure. It could be an ungodly habit, a comfort, or even laziness. But there is freedom to be had when you can name and identify the rope. David’s, on this occasion, was his brother Eliab. God wants us to be our personal best, doing his will, so cut the rope.
