Sermon: Unintended Consequences
Text: Romans 8:28a; Genesis 50:20
Thesis: God’s Sovereignty Trumps Our Intentions.

I. First, We Have Unexpected Benefits.
A. This is on the positive side of the ledger.
B. These are added bonuses.

II. Secondly, We Have Unexpected Drawbacks.
A. These are on the negative side of the ledger.
B. The are the complications which crop up.

III. Finally, We Have Perverse Results.
A. This is sometimes called the cobra effect.
B. An original intentions bites us in the back.

Conclusion:
Robert K. Merton definitely popularized the idea of unintended consequences, but looking at Genesis 50:20, it’s clear that he didn’t invent it. It all comes down to a short but meaningful phrase “But God.” God alone can balance our lives from there unintentional consequences. He alone can take something done for wrong or evil and make something good of it. When you want that which is truly good, just add God to the equation.
