Sermon: The Women In Jesus’ Family
Text: Matthew 1:1 – 16
Thesis: God’s Grace Is Highlighted By The Women.

I. Tamar Is The First Woman Mentioned In Jesus’ Lineage.
A. Her story may raise eyebrows a bit.
B. She was determined to get what was promised.

II. Rahab Is The Next Woman Mentioned In Jesus’ Lineage.
A. She too had a passage about her baggage.
B. The New Testament acknowledges her importance.

III. Ruth Is Then The Next Woman In Jesus’ Lineage.
A. She is known n for her love and dedication.
B. And God did not forget Ruth.

IV. Bathsheba Is Now The Next Woman In Jesus’ Lineage.
A. She’s not mentioned by name.
B. God will use those involved with sin.

V. Mary Is The Final Woman Mentioned in Jesus’ Lineage.
A. Mary was a humble servant.
B. She accepted her role with little hesitation.

Conclusion: So here they are: the five women listed in Jesus’ genealogy. A woman whose past included a sordid sexual encounter with a relative; a gutsy Canaanite prostitute who believe in the true God; a poor but trusting widow from Moab; the beautiful wife of a soldier killed in battle whose relationship with her second husband began with a scandalous affair and pregnancy and a young virgin engaged to a small-town carpenter. These characters were humble, troubled and flawed. These stories are a tribute to the wisdom and the grace of God.
